Concord Student Wins Volunteering Award

News to Cheer Up Concord High School Junior Andrew Kazakes, who's currently on crutches thank to a roundball injury: He's been awarded a President's Student Service Scholarship by the Corporation for National Service. President Clinton announces the awards, which are given to students who offer outstanding service to their community. According to Concord administrator Susan Packer Davis, Andrew performed more than 200 hours of community service over a 12-month period at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica's Knights Service Club, where he helped out with yard sales, fed the homeless, helped with the cooking, and moved the odd heavy object. Andrew will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Oh, and brownie points: Packer Davis calls Andrew "a really friendly, sweet, wonderful guy."

SCHOOL BRIEFS

Concord Student Gets a Perfect Score on SAT Test
Max David Comess, a junior at Concord High School in Santa Monica, achieved a perfect score on the SAT 1, previously known as the SAT exam.    Every year, 1.6 million students take the SAT 1, which is required for admission to most colleges in the country; only about 400 students achieve a perfect score.

Comess’ score came as no surprise to administrators at Concord, who note that he studies multi-variable calculus at UCLA because he finished all the math there is at Concord. [AP Calculus (BC)].
